Skepsel, by Bleksem

The most anticipated Kwaito release of 2008 has come.

Bkeksem’s album, called Skepsel, is a body of music that seeks to revive Kwaito where it is lacking, without the necessity of making it sound like house music, as we have seen many artists having had to do. Having already released what has to be one of the biggest songs of 2008, ‘How Low Can You Go’, Bleksem’s full album is a summation of great beats, interesting collaborations and superb vocal delivery.

Skepsel is a collage of diverse collaborations with contributions from Mandoza, Jaziel Brothers, Krazy Boy, Bongo Riot, Prof Sobukwe, Gazza of Namibia and Dama du ling of Mozambique.

Needless to say, it being a Will Of Steel Production release, Bleksem’s album was produced by the country’s premier beat-maker, DJ Cleo. The album is essentially a Kwaito album, but caters sufficiently for the hip-hop audience with songs such as ‘Or Kanjani’, which has a crunk feel to it, ‘Siyagroova’, the club banging ‘Labantwana’, as well as ‘How Low Can You Go’, a ladies’ favorite.

There was a time when Kwaito was raw, hardcore and uncompromising.  This was before everybody sold out to house music, a survival tactic really.   ‘Kutsa’ is a collaboration that will get a lot of tongues wagging, a coming together of a Kwaito legend and a novice, while on ‘Ezibandayo’ , a song that will become a summer anthem, Bleksem cleverly taps into the culture of festivity during Easter and the December periods ‘Gumba Faya’ is filled with glorious harmonies and a catchy chorus, the uptake by urban radio stations has really pleased us, added to the fact that the song appeals to both the youth and adult audiences.

Bleksem pays tribute to his mother on ‘I Love You Mama’.   It is a beautiful, warm song, which incorporates an amazing arrangement of live music in the form of keyboards and bass guitar. Bleksem’s album is a demonstration to the effect that the evolution of Kwaito is not to make it sound like something it is not.

All the Kwaito songs on Skepsel are a testament to this fact. These songs are about keeping it real, strictly for the kasie.
